WOW participated as a “visual performer” in the “OCHIAI Yoichi x Japan Philharmonic Orchestra project,” a group who reorganizes (updates) orchestras with technology. It has been around 300 years since orchestras were first formed. In that time, media like photography and video have been updated, yet the structure of orchestras, made up of instruments and conductors, hasn’t changed. This project was based on DISRUPTION® (creative destruction), where the master and slave relationship that sees the image follow the “music” and the music follow the “image,” was reconstructed in parallel as an orchestra. It was an attempt to redefine an orchestra through technology, and provide a new “experience” that could be appreciated not only by the eyes and ears, but by the entire body.
As the “video performer,” WOW approached this vision through the rich sounds expressed from the orchestra, the world-view in each of the songs, and the sensations these all created in the mind and heart.
In Transforming Orchestra, the physical representations of the conductors, performers and dancers were transformed into images and spatial representations. In the Sound-Free Concert 2019, visual elements were incorporated in ways to expand the experience and enable anyone to enjoy the performance, regardless of whether they had a hearing impairment or not. In the Crossing Un-Orchestra, attempts were made to control the amount of information in the visual space, using content from a range of concrete and abstract techniques. For this, each person’s cultural background and experiences were called upon, and from the mixes of matches and mismatches came part of a new orchestra experience that stirred the senses to awaken.
The three performances were aimed to bridge an understanding through visual design, so that people who were not familiar with orchestras or classical music could enjoy them.
