DMM KARIYUSHI AQUARIUM
WOW was tasked with planning, directing, and creating the three main pieces of content inside the DMM Kariyushi Aquarium – the all-new entertainment aquarium that combines visual expression with spatial design.
A large multi-screen theater brings guests a fully immersive experience of an Okinawan-themed story of water and life
Guests are greeted by a large video display (12m wide x 4m high x 6m deep on both sides). Here you can experience the “beauty of Okinawa.” The imagery makes it appear as if you are flying through Okinawa’s uniquely vast landscapes; through the sky, over and under oceans, and into the Yambaru forest, as well as by historical monuments like Shurijo Castle. The Shurijo Castle shooting was conducted with the Okinawa Commemorative National Government Park Office's permission. Photogrammetry was used to establish a 3D model.
The immense vastness of Okinawa's sky and beaches
The beauty of Okinawa's ocean offers up a variety of color and expression throughout the day. Lighting and imagery are used to alter shades and colors, and these hues are cast onto the artificial rocks that surround the 18m-wide aquarium, thus depicting the changing contrast and colors of the sky, sea and shoreline, as day turns to dusk and then to night. Scenic expressions include realistic landscapes, as well as the quintessential imagery of Okinawa; “the way everyone imagines Okinawa to be.” The result is an expression of Okinawa as a place without time.
Wondrous Space of Jellyfish and Light
This area is filled with luminous cylindrical columns that reach from floor to ceiling. Jellyfish move gracefully inside the brightly graded columns, emitting wondrous light, continuously transmitted and reflected. The light from these columns is synchronized with music to create a fantastic and extraordinary space.
About DMM Kariyushi Aquarium
DMM Kariyushi Aquarium bears the theme of a “new entertainment aquarium,” which combines the latest visual expression and spatial representation. The beauty of nature displayed, including fauna & flora native to the Okinawa region, allows visitors to forget their physical presence in a commercial facility.
