Battle of Kawanakajima 3D Picture Scroll / VR
About the Video Work
This project aims to promote tourism and circulation to the Kawanakajima Old Battlefield and the surrounding Matsushiro area. It is based on the digital archiving of cultural assets, such as the Ukiyo-e prints “Great Battle of Kawanakajima,” “The Twenty-Four Generals of Takeda,” and “The Eighteen Generals of Uesugi,” which are housed at the Nagano City Museum. The video production utilizes these archives to create visual content. The figures of Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen are portrayed from various angles, with the battles becoming more three-dimensional as the story progresses. The relationship between the two generals is gradually unraveled. Additionally, 3DCG techniques are used to convey the atmosphere and intensity of the battles.
About the Project
This video work is available on YouTube, as well as at the Nagano City Museum's “Kawanakajima Battlefield Exhibition Room”(permanent exhibition) and the Nagano City “Kawanakajima Battlefield Comprehensive Website”. An abridged version is also being shown on JR Nagano Station's digital signage. Furthermore, a VR content version has been created, allowing users to experience dynamic battle scenes by wearing dedicated VR goggles.
The Battle of Kawanakajima
The Battle of Kawanakajima was fought in the northern part of Nagano Prefecture between Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin. Over a span of 12 years, starting in 1553 (the 22nd year of the Tenmon era), five battles were fought. Particularly, the fourth battle in 1561 (the 4th year of the Eiroku era), which took place in the Kawanakajima area located between the Shinano River and Sai River, was a fierce battle that has left many legends, such as the one-on-one battle between Shingen and Kenshin.
