Motion Modality / Layer
For the Yebisu International Festival for Art and Alternative Visions 2022 WOW planned and produced Motion Modality / Layer, an art monument that invigorates the spaces in which it is located, in this case the plaza at Ebisu Garden Place.
Concept
What WOW refers to as “Motion Modality” is an overarching concept combined with various techniques that are put to use to transform the state (or mode) of a space through the behavior of artificial light, with the ultimate aim of enriching that space. It is based on this concept and techniques that for Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions WOW created Motion Modality / Layer to invigorate the space of the plaza at Ebisu Garden Place.
Motion Modality / Layer displayed the following themes.
-Soft light between illumination and images
-Images as landscape
-Giving form to images
Embedding LEDs into the sides of the monument creates soft light reminiscent of indirect illumination, which animates and in turn transforms the space. At the same time, the monument, rising in steps from the ground, created a new topography that had continuity with the plaza itself and blended into the surrounding landscape.
