Penguin Picnic
Sumida Aquarium｜2016
From spring through early summer is a time of the year that is pregnant and overflowing with life. This work aims to show penguins swimming around merrily with the video, as if they were rejoicing in the arrival of the new season. Spring has arrived at the rocks where the penguins live. It releases a large amount of energy and gives birth to a variety of living creatures, from microorganisms to large fish. Before long, the blessings of the water and the birds come to visit, plants start to bud, and the sakura blossoms in its full glory. Together with the spring breeze, a bright blue sky and rows of sakura trees appear on the surface of the water. The video ends by expressing the unbounded energy of all life forms.
About the Exhibition
WOW planned and produced the footage for Penguin Picnic, a new projection mapping project that is on show at Sumida Aquarium from Saturday March 19th to Sunday July 10th, 2016. Penguin Picnic is a projection show program that uses a total of seven projectors all over the bottom of Japan's largest indoor open pool-type penguin tank. The work allows for close-up views of the penguins actively swimming around chasing the projected lights or diving down towards the lights.
By working with video, we aimed to highlight the movements of the penguins, which are their natural way of living.
