The View From There
Highway infrastructure, lined with re-imagined road signage, emerges from the countryside, fractures and twists between buildings as it proceeds to the city. This view, as we advance from the rural to the urban, explores Japanese scenery in its entirety.
The various ideas that flow from moving through this stimulating and distinct environment influence the unique designs of Japanese cars.
About the Work
Design Platform Japan’s first exhibition, JAPAN CAR, was developed by graphic designer Kenya Hara and architect Shigeru Ban, and The View From There was created especially for this exhibition. We tried to show not only the surface exterior design of cars, but what is behind the design of the cars. In conjunction with to the main theme of this exhibition, we depicted the unique designs of Japan itself and how those are mirrored in Japanese car design.
About the Exhibition
We used three video projectors to display The
View From There across a 9m wide screen. We also took special care with the sound would be enveloped within the exhibition space. Apart from this work, there were no extra music or sound elements in this exhibition, so we designed a sound which would be appropriate for the entire exhibition space as well as for The View From There.
