On Friday July 22nd, HOTEL ANTEROOM KYOTO will have a grand renewal opening following its expansion by 67 rooms. Under the concept of a “365 day art fair”, over 200 works by over 70 artists will be exhibited and available for purchase in guest rooms, common rooms and other areas inside the hotel. In addition, 8 artists, including Kohei Nawa and Mika Ninagawa, will overhaul guest rooms to create concept rooms.

At WOW, we produced two visual artworks directed by the Kohei Nawa-led SANDWICH, “Media: nonstop” (a work dealing with the sense of fiction in a media which never stands still) and “Media: no one” (a work dealing with the unreality of people who appear on television), which will be displayed on the televisions in guest rooms.

With recent domestic information regulation, and Brexit, and so on, even in the internet era the influence of television remains as strong as ever, and its power can also be felt as a propaganda tool.

WOW deals primarily with visual media including television, but we also have an art project aspect, and this time we aimed for a somewhat critical perspective in our works.

The reception party being held on Friday, July 22nd will feature a preview of the exhibition inside the hotel, in which all rooms will be open for viewing at leisure, and a talk event organized by HOTEL ANTEROOM KYOTO, featuring Kohei Nawa of SANDWICH, Norito Nakahara of UDS (architect and interior designer), and moderator Taro Igarashi (architecture critic).
