Takuma Nakazi

Takuma has directed or had his hands involved in many of WOW’s most prolific projects for over a decade. Works of note include Tokyo Dense Fog, Wind-Form, Infinity and Tokyo Light Odyssey. His work is less about the medium and more about the various landscapes where each project is conceived. He describes his inspiration coming from the everyday and personal life experiences surrounding us all. Recently Takuma has been focusing his direction towards non-linear storytelling, art works and other installation projects. He is often featured on popular design blogs such as Vimeo Staff Picks and Motionographer.

wind form_02

SHISEIDO|2016
This is an installation work for the event of SHISEIDO ULIMUNE 2nd Anniversary that uses wind and an extremely thin, light cloth (organdy). The cloth is blown by the wind, causing it to flutter in various directions and form a three-dimensional shape and pattern of movement. If the wind is removed for a moment, the cloth is pulled down by the force of gravity and as it falls it resumes its original shape. The interwoven shape and movement of the cloth and wind is simple and beautiful, mesmerizing the observer as a persistent, endless natural phenomenon.

About the Exhibition
Many different animations using cloth were created by placing 12 units of air circulators in the inner circle (4.8m diameter) and 18 units in the outer circle (8m diameter), and controlling their respective outputs.

POEM

Motion Graphics|2021
After seeing the Jomon pottery with my own eyes, I could imagine—from the unique protrusions and patterns—the scenery, natural phenomenon, the appearance and movement of living things, the sounds, and their textures. The design that contains various fragments of information felt like a poem by the Jomon people. While they do not depict the living beings that the Jomon people consumed to survive, the artifacts conveyed their prayer and awe for the living beings that imbued them with life and I believe it is that energy that gave birth to the grotesque yet beautiful shape of Jomon pottery. This work was designed and created based on this image.

WOW25 “Refraction” from Unlearning the Visuals

This work makes use of the refractive properties of curved acrylic to deform images and make them imperfect. We unconsciously assimilate large volumes of images that flood our daily lives as information. By supplementing this sometimes incomplete information ourselves and reconstructing it in our imaginations, there are tantalizing instances when we attain infinite clarity.

About Ultrasuede “Beautiful Possibilities”

Ultrasuede®|2024
Toray's “Ultrasuede®” promotion movie was planned, directed, and produced by WOW. Loved by designers for over 50 years, Ultrasuede® has been continuously chosen across various fields worldwide—not only in fashion and interiors but also in automotive and aircraft interiors, shoes, bags, mobile device cases, and accessories. As a cutting-edge material of Japanese quality, it has evolved through constant technological innovation.

The fabric, spun from raw materials and created through numerous complex processes, is depicted in the film. The tension before the fabric is created and the vibrant colors and textures after it is born are expressed in full CG. The video captures the functionality and emotional beauty of Ultrasuede®, portraying a world that makes viewers want to “touch” it.

UNIQLO 40th Anniversary Exhibition in Paris

UNIQLO|2024
UNIQLO, which celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2024, held a special exhibition “The Art & Science of LifeWear” in Paris to introduce its “LifeWear” concept, which is at the core of its clothing manufacturing. WOW produced the key movie for this special exhibition, as well as the video projected on the wall of the venue's first basement floor. As its motif, the video uses an apartment, which symbolizes everyday life in Paris, to depict the lives of people seen through its windows and the microscopic world of fibers woven by Toray Industries' various technologies (HEATTECH / PUFFTECH / NANODESIGN™), which support UNIQLO's functional clothing.
